Straightforward solutions to difficult problems.

Most teenagers have a friend who has been affected by an eating disorder. Such disorders affect almost 20% of teenage girls in North America at some point in their development.

Magazines and movies constantly stress a thin body image as the defining force for popularity. The message teenagers get is that thin is the only route to popularity and happiness.

Through the Eating Disorder Program, Drs. Katzman and Pinhas, at The Hospital for Sick Children, have developed a program that helps young people and their parents deal with the problems of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia.

First, the book shows parents how to identify an eating disorder and when to become concerned about it.

Second, there is vital information for parents on how to become informed users of the health care system and how to collaborate in their child's treatment.

Third, practical support for parents, family members and coaches enables them to participate in the recovery of a child or adolescent with an eating disorder.

Worksheets, diaries and first-person case studies assists parents and caregivers to help youth overcome an eating disorder.

Description: Seventeen-year-old Emily feels like a chubby plain Jane. It seems like Leah, her best friend since middle school, has turned into a beauty queen overnight. Leah is considering a modeling career, and Emily's secret crush Brett has even asked Leah to the prom. When Leah takes Emily along on her first photo shoot and starts talking about having breast-reduction surgery, Emily feels uglier than ever. Somehow, snacking on junk food seems to ease the pain. As a Christian, Emily knows "inner beauty" is more important than physical appearances, but frankly she is starting to hate herself. Leah hatches a plan to give Emily a long-term makeover and encourages her to start a reasonable exercise and diet plan. It's slow-going and frustrating. As school comes to an end, Leah's aunt announces her plans to send Leah to send to a two-week modeling school in Chicago, but her father will not allow her to go unless Emily agrees to go with her. Two days before the school begins, Emily is dismayed to see she's lost only three pounds. The modeling school isn't as horrible as Emily expects, mostly because the skinny chicks seem to accept her, and they are willing to share their diet secrets, which are far more extreme than Leah's. But they are effective! Energized by the speedy results, Emily soon finds herself on a weight-loss slide she can't seem to stop. Later that summer, the friends work as church-camp counselors for a bunch of mean girls, and Emily's physical health begins to decline. Leah has a cosmetic surgery that goes terribly awry. Together they must find their way back to a godly understanding of what it means to be truly beautiful.

Description: Ellie is frantic. Her two best friends seem to be living life in the fast lane while she putters along the curb. Glamorous blond Magda has got a thousand cute boys buzzing around her, and Goth girl Nadine has just been asked to take part in a national teen modeling contest. All Ellie has are massive panic attacks about her weight. So she decides to go on a diet. But instead of counting calories, Ellie just tries to stop eating altogether. Soon she's starving, miserable, and lying all the time to her friends and family. Luckily, a frightening encounter with a real anorectic, and an encouraging dose of art history from a handsome new teacher ("Beauty is just fashion. Male artists have used beautiful women throughout the centuries but their sizes and proportions keep changing") help Ellie realize that size is just a state of mind.
In this second installment of the Girls trilogy, fabulous British author Jacqueline Wilson keeps her trademark funny bone firmly in place while simultaneously raising some sobering questions about issues like eating disorders and teens' overemphasis on appearance. Despite the laughs, Ellie very nearly lapses into anorexia, Magda gets a scare when her chronic flirting almost leads to date rape, and Nadine realizes that the modeling business could care less about her individuality or intellect. Wrapping serious messages in a sugary comical coating is always the best way to make the medicine go down. Recommended for those teen female readers who want something both funny and filling. (Ages 12 and older)
